Christmas in Ohio

If you know me at all, you know that I love vintage textiles. One of my favorite things to do is wander through an antique mall touching and admiring old quilts, vintage linens and lace. I cannot say exactly why, but if I’m really stressed out or tense, a trip through an antique store is better than wine for calming my nerves — which is saying something, because, well, there are very few things better than wine!

Now earlier this year I told you about a set of beautiful hand-pieced vintage Ohio Stars that I found in a second hand store: striking plain red stars on a simple muslin background, in absolutely perfect condition and all ready to be made into something special. There were 12 blocks in the set and I was so happy when I found them.

While I was with Cindy in Ohio this summer, we developed a plan for the stars: a Christmas table runner. We decided to keep it simple to highlight the stars, so we knew that we wanted to set them off with a simple high-quality muslin border. We spent the better part of a week in Columbus looking for the right binding fabric to pull the project together. Alas, no luck. Then on Friday, we headed out to the Cincinnati area to drop in on our friend Tierney from Tierneycreates.com as she participated in the grand opening of a new art quilt exhibit (you can read more about that event here).

It was getting late in the afternoon, but we had the chance to stop at the Fabric Shack in Waynesville, Ohio just before closing time. We only had a little time to shop because we had to get to the museum in time to hear Tierney participate in a panel discussion, but Holy Moly! Score! Eureka! Great Scott! Inside the sale building, literally on the lowest part of the last rack, we found it: The perfect fabric for our table runner (the red check, not the green)!

Cindy made a pro move and cut the binding on the bias to give our simple design some extra sizzle. I am in love with the final result

May I introduce you to the Gray Barn Designs Christmas in Ohio table runner?

(I know, I know, the green grass kind of takes away from the ambiance, but we must accept our gloriously long fall weather, as we’ll be complaining about the snow soon enough.)

Cindy’s long arm specialist, SJ, applied a lovely, swirly all-over pattern for the quilting. I hauled out some of my Spode Christmas china to experiment with staging. Swoon…

You can make this pattern even if you don’t have vintage stars! Here’s how:

I can’t wait to sail past the browns and the oranges of Thanksgiving decor and get on with the glitz and glamour of Christmas decorating! I expect this runner to be the star of my show this year.

Sunny Summer Days

My quilting buds and I decided to take a break from quilting and enjoy a sunny summer day in the park.

As you can see, Sadie is considering what food might be near that picnic table off to the right and Norma is guarding her stick.  Me…I am just relaxing in the shade, thinking about what food flavor of ice cream is in the freezer!

We were taking a quilting break because my neighbors, who just happen to be teen-age girls, or TAGs (acronym for teen-age girls) came over to make a table runner for their annual July 4th celebration.  What fun we had!  Fabrics were sorted and debated while listening to the latest top 40 hits.

Cutting was a breeze with the rotary cutter (after discussing safety rules, of course!)  Let’s just say flip flops and rotary cutters were making me a nervous wreck!

The design wall was a hit…lots of mixing, matching and singing to those top 40 hits!  They were in love with the blueberry fabric.

Looking good….sewing took a bit of time.

We had to test the “almost finished” project to make sure it was just the right size!

IMG_7830

Good news!  We finished the table runner in the nick of time!  The TAGs and I are working on another project that I hope to show you soon!

Now, where was I before I got distracted by quilting?

Pinwheels Repurposed

This past weekend, I was cleaning up my sewing room after a recent flurry of creativity.  After finishing my Patriotic Pinwheels GBD 07 06 18 table runner, I had a few leftover pinwheel blocks.

Since pinwheels are one of my favorite blocks, I just couldn’t bear to throw them in a scrap pile never to be seen again until 2028!  So…I made a few July 4th greeting cards.

I had some blank note cards on hand and used a decorative stitch to sew the pinwheels to the cards.  I did snip all those loose threads, just in case you’re wondering!

Below is what the inside of the card front looks like.  Do you think my needle is dull from sewing on card stock?  Oh well, it was worth it!  I might use some fabric glue and small fabric scraps to add color and fun to the inside of the card, who knows where this will lead?

Garden Notes:

My peonies finished blooming about two weeks ago.  The vases in my house now hold blossoms from my Earth Angel Rose Bush, a Mother’s Day gift from my son last year.

Patriotic Table Runner – Free Pattern!

Memorial Day is just around the corner and that means July 4th is not far behind!  I got a jump start on July 4th planning by designing this Patriotic Pinwheels Table Runner.

Patriotic_pinwheels_2

The fabric is from the Sweet Land of Liberty Collection designed by Thomas Wood and Deborah Edwards for Northcott Fabrics

I am attracted to fabrics with words and this word fabric…well…it practically jumped off the shelf and into my welcoming arms! Pinwheels are another favorite of mine, so why not combine my faves into a great July 4th table runner?

Below is a bird’s eye view of the finished table runner.  If you are a beginning quilter, our step by step instructions will help guide you through the pinwheel making process.

We’ll be posting this pattern to the Fave Quilts website as well.  There will be plenty of July 4th quilting inspiration on Fave Quilts so be sure to take a look!

I bought lots of extra Sweet Land of Liberty fabric so I’ll get back to work and make a few more table runners for Christmas gifts.  Yes, it’s not too early to start thinking about such things!
