Glam Girl Lotion Mini Quilt

I decided to make the Glam Girl Lotion Mini Quilt in bold, sophisticated colors and fabrics. Here is my result!

Sandy designed this foundation paper pieced pattern to be super easy and she was spot on in her design! This pattern goes together quickly and delivers a punch of quilted cuteness and sophistication. I was thinking a metallic fabric would be nice to use and then I came across this feminine scroll which works well with black and white polka dots.

I used blue painter’s tape as a guide for my quilting stitches. I frequently use this tape because it does not leave a residue on my fabric and I can easily move and re-use the tape as needed.

I added a small hanging sleeve to the back.

The finished size of this mini quilt is 7 1/4 inches wide and 10 1/2 inches long.

Glam Girl Lipstick Mini Quilt

My mini quilt obsession continues with another one of Sandy’s great designs! This foundation paper pieced pattern is from the Glam Girl Series that Sandy is known for. Since it’s almost spring here in Ohio, I was inspired to use some “springy” colors from my stash. What do you think?

I am still “refining” my machine quilting skills. Since I love polka dots so much, I added more to the binding. I like the results!

The finished size of this mini quilt is 6 inches wide by 11 inches long. It is the perfect size to hang in a narrow space AND you can use this pattern for some of those skinny mini quilt swaps!

Jelly Roll Quilt

At one of my quilt guild retreat weekends, we all brought our favorite jelly roll to make a quilt using the 1600 technique. Below is a photo of my result. DSCN2504 I chose a jelly roll with Moda Fabric’s “Table for Two” line by Sandy Gervais. The colors are bright and cheery with hearts, flowers and other complimenting prints.

Our jelly roll quilting retreat was fun because everyone brought their own favorite jelly roll. There were lots of different colors, textures and fabrics — a quilter’s dream! Sewing with jelly roll strips was a new concept for me. I had to throw conventional techniques out the window and trust that all these strips would really turn into something beautiful.

A jelly roll 1600 quilt is a nice project for beginning quilters. It’s a good lesson for sewing straight seams (there are lots and lots of them!) and it helps you learn to sew without pinning your seams together. Here is a link to a good tutorial: Jelly Roll Quilt 1600 Technique

Once I finished sewing all my strips together, I added a 1 1/2 inch inner border in a solid black fabric. Then I added a 3 1/2 inch outer border in a large, bold print from the “Table for Two” fabric line. Ms. JM, my quilter, added lots of curves and swirls to make this quilt even more special. I gave this quilt to a new bride–I just couldn’t resist passing on the love from these hearts and flowers.

Candy Under Wraps Quilt

After I made all my candies, I had to admire my color scheme! Today we will cut the fabric to make our larger candy blocks and sew these candy blocks together. This is the fun part because our quilt is taking shape!

Grab your 3/4 yard of aqua fabric and cut 36 five inch squares. Below is a suggested cutting diagram:

Next, cut 9 two inch squares from your white fabric. Let’s take an inventory! You should now have:

36 candies

36 aqua 5×5 inch squares

9 white 2×2 inch squares

Now we are going to sew! Hooray!

Unit 1

Locate two of your favorite candies. With right sides together, pin one candy to the right side of a white 2×2 square.

Sew a 1/4 inch seam.

Press the seam toward the white square.

Sew a candy to the left side of the white square. Your candy unit should look like the photo below. Make 9 of Unit 1.

Unit 2

With right sides together, pin one candy to the right side of one aqua 5×5 inch square. Sew a 1/4 inch seam.

Sew another 5×5 inch square to the left side of the candy. Press seams toward the aqua fabric. Your candy unit should look like the photo below. Make 18 of Unit 2.
