Free Pattern for Sweet Heart Mug Rug

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and I wanted to make something special for mom.  I had some extra fabric from my Heartland Modern 01 10 18 quilt and thought I would make a few mug rugs/coasters for her.  Below is my finished product, isn’t it a sweet heart?  (Pun intended!)

Mom’s favorite color is pink and she likes to drink tea.  I thought I would test this mug rug today, strictly for quality control purposes, of course!  Yep, it passed the test!

I put my trusted Bernina to work last night.  I pieced it AND quilted this sweet heart in no time flat!

Stuck on the Border II

In a previous post, I was indecisive about what border and binding to add to my kaleidoscope pillow.  Thanks for all your feedback!

Rummaging through my sewing supplies, I found a package of Wright’s Bias Tape Maxi Piping and my plan came together in a flash!  I was no longer stuck on the border!

I added a black border to my pillow and used the red bias tape maxi piping for an accent.  This piping went on quickly because I used the zipper foot attachment for my trusted Bernina.  Yikes!  Lots of batting fuzz on my fabric!

My walking foot was put to good use as I made my way around the outside edge, stitching in the ditch of my seam.

Here’s a look at the back of my pillow.  It has an envelope back so I can easily slip the pillow in and out of the pillow cover.

I am loving my new pillow and well, we all know “there’s no place like home”!!!!!

Fuzzy Faux Fur “Fun”

Our niece is in college and wanted a few pillow covers for her birthday (oops, that was in July)!

In order to make up for my belated birthday gift, I splurged and bought some of this luxurious faux fur.  It made a gorgeous pillow cover!

I had a left over strip of faux fur so I mixed it with some fleece to make another pillow cover.  What a fun project that turned out soft and cozy!

After admiring my work, I had to move on to the clean up….not so fun!  Fuzzy faux fur sheds like crazy!  Yes, this is what the aftermath of my creativity looked like!  I had to do a deep clean on my trustworthy Bernina.  Let’s just say the deep clean involved a vacuum cleaner attachment.

My floor looked even better than my sewing machine…ha!  I think the clean up took longer than the sewing.

P.S.  She LOVED her Fuzzy Faux Fur pillow covers!  Her birthday gift, although late,   helped me to maintain my status as her “favorite aunt”!

My old boyfriend Vlad

We are just days away from the end of summer, so I thought I’d dust off one of my old quilted boyfriends and give him a little sunlight. I designed Vlad the mug rug last fall.

Vlad 2.0 (pattern here) has a new look because I finally, finally bought a new-to-me Bernina and I am venturing into the world of true quilting, not just piecing. To be sure, I’m no Lori Kennedy nor am I a Tim Latimer, but the meandering stitch on Vlad makes me somewhat hopeful that I will be able to <eventually> become self-sufficient throughout the entire quilting process.

I snagged the new machine off a Facebook garage sale. I got lucky and the machine only needed a regular tuneup. The steal deal also included lots of extra feet, including a walking foot, an embroidery foot and quilting foot. I think I’m going to love my little Bernie — maybe I’ve acquired another boyfriend?
