Morel of the story….

Well, my trusty sewing machine isn’t so trusty.  Yesterday my feed dogs stopped working right in the middle of a project!  I took my poor baby to the repair shop and I am not sure when she will come home.

What to do?  I’ll go mushroom hunting, of course!  It’s morel mushroom season here in Ohio.  Plenty of sun, warm weather and rain guarantee a good hunting season;  we were lucky enough to find a few in our yard.  Here’s a pic for those of you who are wondering what morel mushrooms look like:

After these beauties were cleaned, I cut them into smaller pieces, dipped them in milk, rolled them in crushed buttery crackers and then fried them in (wait for it…..) BUTTER!  They have an almost nutty flavor and are just divine when fried in a cast iron skillet.

Three years ago, my husband and I were reading through an “Off the Beaten Path –  Michigan” book and we noted that Boyne City, Michigan hosts the National Morel Mushroom Festival each year.  We decided to make the seven hour drive to Boyne City and we had so much fun!  Perhaps it was fun because we found a “few” mushrooms!

While we didn’t win the grand championship, we each took first place for the men’s and the women’s morel mushroom hunt.  My trophy is a large morel carved from wood and is pictured below.

The trophy is the ultimate morel of my story!  Do you have a good morel story too?
