In my February 15, 2017 post I showed you the start of my art quilt. I used a Laura Heine floral collage pattern called Potpourri…the cutest giraffe ever!
I renamed Potpourri “Gracie” because she just seems so, well…graceful! Here is my finished masterpiece…Gracie’s runway debut!
Below is a close up of her face. You can see she has a fairly tight meandering stitch to keep all the flowers in place. I am totally in love with the background print. It’s from the Desert Bloom collection by Amanda Herring for Riley Blake Designs. The fabric features text and sketches about gardening. It’s the perfect background for a floral collage quilt!
Gracie’s tail was fun to make. It was a floral print but when cut into smaller pieces, it looks like a collection of feathers. It makes a nice “swishy” tail for a giraffe, don’t you think?
Below is a view of Gracie’s legs and feet. I kept adding flowers here and there and finally had to tell myself to stop BUT can there really ever be too many flowers??!! The grass is made from several different batik fabrics I had on hand. I like how they add dimension to those lovely feet.
This was a fun quilting project. It gave me a chance to learn a new technique and to go big and bold with color, pattern and texture. I highly recommend giving one of Laura’s patterns a try!
Gracie looks lovely. Very artful placement of flowers for her face as well as her tail.
Thank you, Meg! I did spend some time on her face with the paisleys, I like how they curved in just the right places!
Gracie is stunning, Cindy! I love how the background fabric reads “giraffe” when you view it from a distance.
Thanks, she’s hanging in the guest room waiting for you to visit!
Love your giraffe.
Thank you! I always smile when I look at Gracie.
It’s very impressive as well as beautiful!! Love it!!
Thank you, Hilltop friend!
Awesome! To look at the Giraffe you would think the fabric was one whole piece and not pieced. Your work is truly beautiful.
Thank you, it was a fun project! Laura is an amazing designer.
Gracie is a very pretty giraffe lady! What a beautiful piece and I like how it is quilted!
Thanks T! She is one of those special quilts for me.
Gracie is a WOW! She is so beautiful and I love the background fabric selection. She is show worthy! Really, you could consider entering this in a quilt show.
Thanks, Abbie! Some of my friends have said the same thing. I will look around for some quilt shows. I’ve considered the Ohio State Fair…maybe I will look into how to enter Gracie.
Oh that would be so neat, I encourage you to enter 😊
The Gracie is absolutely gorgeous! I do hope you enter a show.
Love, love, love this!
