Hexies Re-Visited

In my July 28, 2106 blog post, I mentioned I have a long term relationship with hexies.  I participate in fat quarter swaps on Instagram and one of my swap partners sent a box to me that included one inch hexie templates and fabric scraps to play with.  I liked the fabric colors and sewed them together in random order.

I was playing around with background fabrics and decided to go with this red and white polka square fabric.  LUV!  The hexies really stand out!

I had hand basted the fabric squares to the hexie paper templates before I sewed them together so I removed the basting threads and the paper templates.  THEN I steam pressed them to death so they would keep their cute little hexie shapes.  Finally I pinned them to the background fabric and machine appliqued the hexies.

I used a smokey gray nylon for the top thread and a chocolate brown cotton/polyester for the bobbin thread…not the wisest choice because the brown bobbin showed through the lighter fabrics!  I probably should have used a light gray or tan bobbin color…good learning experience for machine applique!

Here’s the back, looking at the pattern of stitches I think the hexies look like a little Schnauzer dog…but I am partial because I have my Sadie Sue Schnauzer!  I brought my threads to the back and tied them off.

Here’s the final version before quilting.  It will make a nice mini wall hanging or a mug rug as a gift for a friend or maybe just for me!

I’ve been focusing on mug rugs, smaller quilts and wall hangings lately.  They are fun to create and the completion time is much shorter than a large quilt!

I love the little dog outline on the back, and to be honest, it really does look like Sadie Sue. I’ve got to get into Instagram swaps– what a great way to get a fun quilting surprise in the mail. Your partner is loads of fun based on the color palette she sent you.
